City Tax Collector Teresa Babon announced that effective immediately, credit cards will no longer be accepted by clerks at the Tax Office counter as a method of paying taxes. Since the Tax Office recently converted to a new billing system, the ability to accept credit card payments at the counter has been extinguished.
In a press release, the city noted taxpayers may still use credit cards in a self-service fashion in the tax office. A terminal has been set up at the far end of the counter at which taxpayers can access the credit card screen and make payments. Step by step instructions have been posted near the terminal and taxpayers are encouraged to read them before attempting to access the system. Assistance will be provided on an as-needed basis.
In order to avoid long lines and wait time, taxpayers are encouraged to pay from the convenience of their own homes if they have access to the internet. Bo to www.bristolct.gov. On the left hand side, click on Pay Online. Then, click on Tax Payments. You will be brought to the same payment screen shown at the self-service terminal in the Tax Office. At the end of the transaction, you will be given the opportunity to print a confirmation page.
If using a credit card, a convenience fee of 2.95% will be added to each bill paid. If using a VISA debit card, the charge will be a flat fee of $3.95 for each bill paid. If you choose to use the e-check feature, the flat fee will be $1.50 for each bill paid and you will be required to enter your Bank Routing Number as well as your Checking Account Number.
These fees will be applied regardless of where you make your payment, at the self-service terminal in the tax office or the comfort of your own home. The fees are not charged or collected by the City of Bristol but by the credit card vendor processing your payments.
