Hard work has its own rewards for

$

By KAITLYN NAPLES

Bristol Eastern High School’s top two students are happy to see all of their hard work has finally paid off, especially when they received their acceptance letters to college.
Mitchell Lipka, this year’s valedictorian, will be attending Harvard University this fall to study Math. Bethany Cucka, the salutatorian, will be attending Brown University to study Chemistry and Biology.
When the two found out they had been named the top two students, they both said they knew they were ranked at the higher end of their class. But Lipka added “it’s still always nice being recognized for your hard work.”
After four years of high school, both students could reflect on many memories and accomplishments that have brought them to where they are today.
“Figuring myself out and setting goals was definitely something I am most proud of,” Cucka said. She said starting out as a freshman, and seeing herself as she is now, brought a perspective of how she has changed and said she credits that to always setting goals. Whether it was in volleyball or academics, Cucka said she knew where she wanted to be, and that she wanted to carry the sciences with her into her future. She was also part of the volleyball team, which recently won this year’s state championship.
“I am definitely proud of who I have become,” she added.
For Lipka, he never played a sport until he got to high school but he is happy he started. Lipka was on the swimming team, cross country, and the track team. He said he enjoyed being an athlete.
Both students attribute their successes to how hard they have worked throughout their academic lives.
“Success is how hard you work,” Lipka said. “I always wanted to learn new things, and I always make sure I am interested in actually learning about a subject,” and containing that information.
Cucka went through high school with the same idea, in that she said she loves learning.
“My goal has always been to get good grades, go to college, and get a job,” she said, adding that having that in her mind helped her get to where she is today. “Those were my motivating factors to work hard.”
Some of their favorite memories happened around their athletics.  Winning the state championship this year with her volleyball team was one of Cucka’s favorite memories of high school, she said.
“When can I ever say that I won a state championship,” she said, adding that she enjoyed the time she has spent with her teammates, as they became family.
Lipka said he had so many favorite memories in high school he couldn’t pick just one. Between being a member of band, and also an athlete he has had many memorable moments. He said he is sad to be leaving, but looking forward to what the future brings.
The duo will leave Bristol Eastern with advice and words of wisdom to their fellow classmates, and the incoming freshman.
“Take responsibility for your own education,” Cucka said she would tell incoming freshman. “There are so many people here to help you, but you have to be committed to succeeding.”
Lipka said he would tell freshman to always “try hard, and remember that high school is very different from middle school. These grades matter now.”
To his fellow seniors, he said it was difficult to give advice since he is in the same position as them, but he will be moving forward by remembering that he is going to be on his own in college.
“Teach yourself things,” he said.
Cucka added she would tell her classmates to remember there are many open doors in life, and to keep the ones that matter, open.
“Find something you’re passionate about and follow through with it,” she said. “Don’t pick the easy path just because it’s easy.”
Bristol Eastern’s graduation will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 6 p.m. outside on the football field.

Legislators to hold petition drive against gas tax hike

$

Bristol’s state senator and state representative issued the following press release:

Help Prevent a Connecticut Gas Tax Hike

Who? Senator Jason Welch and Representative Whit Betts

What? Hold a petition drive to fight the July gas tax hike

When? Monday, June 24 at 4:00 pm

Where? Food Bag Citgo

          54 Farmington Ave (Rte 6)

          Bristol, CT

“This year Republicans tried to eliminate this outrageous 16% gas tax increase. Our alternative proposal to raising the gas tax was to reduce spending by our state government. This idea was rejected by Gov. Malloy and the Democrat controlled legislature. Why did they oppose this suggestion? Ask them,” Rep. Betts. “This gas tax increase, on top of imposing the largest tax increases on people and businesses in 2011, reinforces Connecticut’s reputation as one of the most expensive places in the country to live and work.”

“We can fight this tax hike and send a message to the administration that enough is enough.  Shared sacrifice should not have to come at the expense of families who already pay a hefty price to live in Connecticut,” said Sen. Welch.

Background:

  • One of the largest gas tax hikes in state history is scheduled to hit Connecticut on July 1.

  • The July 1 gas tax hike would raise prices at the pump in Connecticut by about 4 cents per gallon.

  • The gas tax in Connecticut is already about 22 cents higher than in neighboring states like Massachusetts and is one of the highest in the nation.

  • The tax set to increase is a hidden state tax on gasoline that you pay above and beyond the state (25¢) and federal (18.4¢) per-gallon taxes. This tax is a percentage of the wholesale price of gasoline and is scheduled to increase 16% on July 1st.

  • Gas tax revenues will not be used to fix roads and bridges as was originally intended. Instead, the majority party voted to use the money for the general fund.

The online petition can be found at www.AxeTheGasTaxCT.com

The New England Carousel Museum shows its colors.

To the editor:

“Bristol Shows Its Color” sponsored by the Bristol Museum Collaborative is continuing as a patriotic salute to our city’s veterans. All the local museums, as well as the Federal Hill, ForestvilleVillage and West End Associations have decorated their buildings and locations recognizing the men and women who have dedicated themselves to the cause of freedom. Many city residents and businesses have joined in with patriotic displays of flags, wreaths, bunting and ribbons to demonstrate their appreciation and respect for those who have served our country so nobly. As the Fourth of July approaches, please join Bristol’s effort to remember these individuals who have given so much in the past and those that our serving today. Although “ Bristol Shows Its Colors” officially runs from Memorial Day to The Fourth of July many veterans have asked if these displays can be maintained until Labor Day. This certainly would be a fitting tribute. The Bristol museums plan to continue and to expand, “Bristol Shows Its Colors” as an annual tribute. Please become involved this year and in the future. Let’s all join in making Bristol a red, white and blue community this Independence Day.

A Bristol man was arrested yesterday after police said he is connected to the murder of Odin Lloyd. Former Patriots player and Bristol resident Aaron Hernandez was arrested and charged with murder, and other gun charges, yesterday. The following statement was release from the New Britain State’s Attorney:
“Since last week, the Bristol Police Department and the New Britain State’s Attorney’s office have, at the request of authorities in Massachusetts, been assisting in their investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the homicide of Odin Lloyd.
At this point, one individual, Carlos Ortiz of Bristol, has been charged in Connecticut as a Fugitive from Justice. On Wednesday, June 26, Ortiz appeared in Bristol Superior Court and waived extradition to Massachusetts.
Both the Bristol Police Department and the New Britain State’s Attorney’s Office will continue to provide whatever assistance we can in connection with this investigation. As the investigation is ongoing, we can have no further comment at this time. All documents related to this matter have been sealed by order of the court.”

Legislators urge voters sign petition on gas tax

Senator Jason Welch (R-Bristol) and Representative Whit Betts (R-Bristol) along with Republican legislators from across the state gathered signatures for a petition to fight increases in the state gas tax and diesel fuel tax scheduled for July 1. Motorists can sign an online petition by visiting www.AxeTheGasTaxCT.com.

“What was overwhelmingly clear is that people are mad,” said Betts in a press release. “They are fed up and frustrated with having to see their tax dollars being used to cover overspending by a bloated state government.”

“These tax hikes are killing our economy and hurting Connecticut families and businesses. We can fight this tax hike and send a message to the administration that enough is enough.  Shared sacrifice should not have to come at the expense of families who already pay a hefty price to live in Connecticut,” said Welch in a press release.

The release from Welch and Betts said the gas tax in Connecticut currently is about 22 cents higher than in neighboring states like Massachusetts and the July 1 gas tax hike would raise prices at the pump another 4 cents per gallon.

Legislative Republicans offered plans this legislative session in committee and in both the State Senate and State House of Representatives to eliminate the tax hike and they proposed several options to replace the lost revenue. None of which were accepted by the majority party, said the release.

The Bristol petition drive took place at the Citgo Mini Mart on Route 6. During the course of two hours the lawmakers collected nearly 100 signatures from motorists. As of Tuesday, more than 12,000 people statewide had signed the online petition. The next step is to present the petition to the Governor in the hopes public pressure will enable him to call lawmakers back to Hartford for a special vote to repeal the tax hike.

Group has plan for MBS

A group of Bristolites are still making an attempt to save the former Memorial Boulevard Middle School from being sold to a developer.
The school is currently in the middle of an RFP, or request for proposal, process with one developer, Summit Real Estate Strategies, eyeing the property to turn the school into a residential building with a gym and access to the pool, while also preserving the theater.
Last month, the Memorial Boulevard Arts and Technology Center group was created by residents who want the city to keep the school in its possession and create a building that would preserve the theater, have incubator space for businesses and artists, and maintain “the historic integrity” of the building, group member Jesse Gallagher said.
“Imagine driving down Memorial Boulevard into the heart of the city, and seeing an anchor building (with artists, entrepreneurs, and more welcoming you into Bristol),” Gallagher said, adding that the group has reached more than 5,000 people.
“Everyone I have spoken with supports this idea,” which has three main focuses, he said.
The first focus is to gain a surplus in revenue for the property. Right now, the city is paying about $120,000 per year to maintain the facility. Gallagher said the property would begin to start creating $250,000 in revenue for the city after three years, and could potentially bring in $500,000 after five years. The figures for the building include rent costs at about $500 per room for incubator spaces.
This idea came several months ago from the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, who Gallagher said the group has been working with and would like to work with on this idea venture. The chamber proposed to create a private/public partnership, which is another one of the group’s focuses, and would have relocated their offices to the old school building. They also would bring in small companies that are looking to get out of their homes and into the community.
At $500 rental per room, and 30 to 35 rooms available, Gallagher said that income alone would bring in $180,000 annually.
In addition to that, the theater would be open for use with a possible rental fee of $1,000, which Gallagher said would bring in $5,000 if the theater had five major concerts per year. There would also be ticket prices and other sources of revenue.
Another idea the group has is to turn the gym into an indoor playground for children, where revenue would come from admission prices, birthday parties, and concessions.
Gallagher also said the state’s Regional Planning Agency is interested in assisting with a possible incubator space and said there are grants available of upwards of $2 million.
“It doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything; to me it is a no-brainer,” Gallagher said, adding that he has spoken with city leaders about the group and its mission. “Selling the building would be offensive (to myself and others),” Gallagher said, especially since he is a resident in the historic Ingraham House on Federal Hill.
At last week’s Real Estate Committee meeting, the commissioners postponed any action on the school building. They said the mayor is meeting with the Summit Real Estate Strategies, and head of the committee Councilor Eric Carlson said he will wait until after that to start planning workshops that would be open to the public. City Councilor Ken Cockayne, who stated in the past he is in favor of Summit’s plan because it will get the building back on the tax rolls, said he had no comment on the Memorial Boulevard group because the school is still in the middle of the RFP process.
Primarily, this group is looking to keep a historic building, alive, and increase the traffic into the city’s downtown, especially when it is in the process of its revitalization.
Gallagher said the group is open to other— and better— ideas from the local community on the possibilities for the school, other than selling it.
He said there is no way of guaranteeing that once the building is sold the theater will be preserved, and the building could even potentially be razed. He said the group is looking to engage the city leaders and community in a dialogue.
There is an opportunity for the public to express their input about what they would like to see done with the old school.

Reconstruction on Matthews Street starts Monday

The City of Bristol is scheduled to start reconstructing a portion of Matthews Street from Hill Street to Clark Avenue starting Monday, July 1. Work will consist of pulverizing the existing pavement, recycling the material to create a new roadway base, re-grading the roadway surface and installing new asphalt and curbing. The work will take approximately two weeks to complete.
Residents are advised that the portion of driveways located within the city roadway right of way will be disturbed and reconstructed as part of the project. Once construction is complete, the City will restore affected areas by loaming, seeding, repairing walkways and driveway aprons.
There may be minor traffic delays during construction, however the road will remain open for mail delivery, emergency vehicles, and local traffic at all times. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted as needed during construction.
If you should have questions or concerns about this project, please feel free to contact Public Works at (860) 584-6297.
