On Wednesday, Robert Michalik received the nomination of area Democrats in his bid for the 31st Senate District – which includes Bristol, Plainville, Plymouth, Thomaston, and part of Harwinton.
Michalik will run against Bristol city councilor Henri Martin, who received the Republican nod. Both candidates look to replace Republican Jason Welch, who chose not to run again.
A press release from his election committee reported Michalik was joined by dozens of supporters at the Bristol Public library, where a reconvened convention was held following last month’s withdrawal of Democrat David Roche from the race.
“I am honored and thrilled to be the Democratic candidate for state senate,” said Michalik, according to the press release. “I promise to work tirelessly every day to ensure a better future for our community – to create jobs, hold the line on taxes, and make investments in education and job training.”
“I have known Rob for many years. He is well-qualified for the position,” said State Representative Elizabeth “Betty” Boukus, who nominated Michalik at the convention, according to the press release. “Rob has the work-ethic, knowledge, and experience to get the job done as our state senator.”
“I am excited that Rob is making this run for state senate,” added Calvin Brown, who seconded Michalik’s nomination, said the release. “As a member of the Bristol City Council, I am confident that Rob will serve our community well. He brings an impressive resume and a broad understanding of the issues we face. With his background in economic development, he knows what it takes to grow jobs and the economy.”
Michalik is a lifelong resident of the district and currently lives in Plainville with his wife Kathy. He earned his master’s degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and worked for several years as a marketing research analyst. He is a former member of the Plainville Planning and Zoning Commission and was elected to three terms on the Plainville Town Council. For seven years, he worked for U.S. Senator Christopher Murphy, most recently as the senator’s state Economic Development Director. Michalik is currently on leave from his current job as the Director of Legislative Affairs at the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.
